Protect Your Natural Stone Landscape Elements From Weather Damage

Lush green garden with tiered stone fountainNatural stone landscape elements can give your yard a unique look that is both casual and refined. When stone walkways or stairs are originally installed, they look beautiful. However, after a few years the materials may begin to deteriorate and you can be left with pile of rubble. Whether you have a custom patio or statuary in your garden, here are some simple steps you can take to protect them.

Ice Cracks It Up

The biggest detriment to fountains, statues and other natural stone elements is ice. When the temperatures turn cold enough to freeze at night, then warm up during the day, your birdbath will feel it. Any element that contains water should be fully drained before the first frost arrives, or you risk getting unwanted cracks.

To avoid problems, empty pieces out and turn them over. Even better, put them in a shed or garage.  Do not wrap items with garbage bags, because moisture can build up inside. Instead, you can use canvas, burlap or polypropylene.

Pavers Need Help, Too

Natural stone weather damage can turn a once attractive walkway or patio into a crumbling mess.  If you have flagstone or similar materials, you can protect it with a few simple steps.

  1. Sweep to remove any loose dirt and grit.
  2. Remove any piles of leaves or other materials. They make a perfect hosting ground for mold and mildew.
  3. Use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the stones with water.
  4. Mild detergent can be used to remove grease stains leftover from summertime barbecues.

Protecting your natural stone landscape elements isn’t difficult. Before the weather turns cold, clean up any stone pathways or porches. Also, drain all the water from stone statuary to reduce the risk of cracking. Anticipating problems can help you stop them before they occur.
